Ex-APGA senatorial aspirant defects to NDC in Anambra
The wave of political overtures ahead of the 2027 general elections is unsettling the atmosphere in Anambra State as former senatorial aspirant of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for the Anambra South District, Chief Ebuka Onunkwo, has dumped the ruling party to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The wave of political overtures ahead of the 2027 general elections is unsettling the atmosphere in Anambra State as former senatorial aspirant of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for the Anambra South District, Chief Ebuka Onunkwo, has dumped the ruling party to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Onunkwo had contested the APGA primary elections last year to fill the vacant seat in his district following the death of Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah.
He did not secure the party’s ticket.
The development almost triggered a crisis within the party in the senatorial zone.
Onunkwo made a fresh declaration about two months ago to contest the APGA primary election.
His defection to the NDC took place on Saturday in Abuja, where he attended the party’s national convention, a move that is reportedly unsettling the ranks of APGA in the area.
An intimidating number of his supporters and party members are reported to have concluded plans to join him en masse in the NDC.
Chief Onunkwo said the move reflects his commitment to honour the promise he made to his teeming supporters: to be on the ballot and represent their interests at the national level. He noted that the NDC provides a platform that aligns with grassroots aspirations and inclusive participation.
He pledged to focus on practical, people-centred representation for Anambra South, with emphasis on economic opportunities, youth empowerment, and community development.
The campaign team described the effort as a cross-party initiative, built on broad support from constituents across the senatorial district.
